There was a landscape by Nerone that I would have liked to buy, with a sweet Po sunset and, suddenly, a wild stroke of the brush coming from other places. These surprises and dismays are characteristic of the man of Codisotto a Sera n. 21 (I like the address as well as his pictures). The laugh in the portrait of Alcide Cervi and the paleness of some faces in the midst of green grounds must be remembered as the signs of a contradiction in which love and ruthlessness find a new emphasis.

In the afternoon, we went to take a walk along the river. He was silent and he would rather have brawled than start speaking, but I was not there, with that awful cold weather, for being beaten or for listening to myself.
His lips quiver when he relaxes and begins to say that this is a very strange world, that people are mad, but that something important can come out of this earth. "This river - he says - that gives you a fine view in the evening and makes you cry in the morning, the fog that torments you, the cold: the naive painting was born here". And then he burst out: "As far as I'm concerned, art is a trade. Not art to say artist. A trade, like the man who works in the workshop, like the one who digs the garden. This is art, for me. Picasso, all those fibs, I don't care a rap"
Every painter has ignored or disliked other painters. Rousseau didn't love matisse and maybe one day the artis-craftsman Sergio Terzi will find out how much he also owes to the old Pablo. Suppose we are at the cutting of the film on Nerone: I know, Rota, I know, at this point you require a full, absolute and rigorous silence, a pause that gives the shivers, and I say yes, I agree, no music, and along the Po, until the image vanishes, only his words, with increasing rhythm: "Like the man who works in the workshop, like the one who digs the garden". Voice of a sincere heart, beating with emotion.
